Does Your Roof Need Replacement Rather Than Repair?

If you have a roof that is in bad shape, you may be wondering if the roof is in need of replacement or if you can get by with repair. That's why it helps to know the signs that you are actually in need of roof replacement

Curling Shingles

Get up close to your roof and look at the edges of your shingles. Does it look like the edges are curling upward across the entire roof surface? This is a sign that they are starting to deteriorate, and you would actually need to replace all of the shingles to fix the problem. If ignored, the shingles will only get worse and provide less protection to your home.

Poor Tab Adhesion

The bottom edge of your shingles will have an adhesive layer that helps them stick to the row of shingles beneath it. Those shingles should still form a good bond, even after years of wear and tear from the weather. If you are able to get on the roof to inspect the shingles, try spot-checking the shingles to see if they easily lift off the surface. If so, then they are no longer adhering to the roof and should be replaced. While it is okay to use roofing cement to repair a few odd shingles that are not sticking to the surface, having it across the entire roof is a much bigger problem that requires replacement.

Acidic Debris Damage

If your roof is constantly covered with debris from nearby trees, all of those natural materials can leave behind acidity that actually causes damage to your roof material. It is a problem that cleaning will not even fix because the damage has already been done and the roofing material will need to be replaced. The roofing shingles will be weak in these areas, and more likely to cause a leak in the future.

Missing Granules

Asphalt shingles are going to have a layer of granules on them that give the roof protection from the sun. Over time, these granules can become loose and fall off the surface of the shingles, making the material more vulnerable to damage. Granules are not something that you can replace, so it will require the replacement of the materials if it is happening across the entire roof surface.
